FUSE hosts three-day training for high school educators as part of its Teaching Reading for Basic Education under English Training Program titled “ Teaching reading and Varied Related Literacies for High School Teachers: The Science and Pedagogy”. Attended by 68 educators from Metro Manila’s Schools Division Offices (SDOs) and private schools, focused on the Science of Reading (SoR) and effective literacy strategies.

Facilitated by Dr. Rosario I. Alonzo and Professor Audrey Morallo, the training focused on the Science of Reading (SoR) and its practical classroom applications. Teachers explored how language competence—including vocabulary, language structure, and verbal reasoning—supports reading success. The training also emphasized critical thinking skills and broadening literacy to include media, digital, and information literacy.

Day 2 centered on essential literacy components: vocabulary development, genre/text analysis, and discourse signals. The morning session included a detailed exploration of vocabulary development and text analysis techniques, followed by a hands-on workshop where participants created vocabulary and genre/text analysis activities. In the afternoon, teachers learned about discourse signals—key linguistic tools for enhancing comprehension—and engaged in another workshop to design activities incorporating these strategies.

On Day 3, the focus shifted to practical classroom applications. Educators reviewed feedback on media literacy activities and participated in an assessment-focused session using the Cloze Procedure. Teachers honed their skills in analyzing narrative and expository texts, creating PISA-style comprehension questions, and applying these strategies in lesson plans.

This successful training reinforces FUSE Foundation’s ongoing commitment to empowering educators and improving literacy instruction in the Philippines.
