Eighty-nine teachers from public elementary schools in Ilocos Sur and
Vigan City recently underwent a five-day training seminar at the FUSE
Learning Center for Teachers, in Manila, which aims to enrich the
participants’ teaching skills in English, Mathematics and Science.

The teachers, who came from at least 50 elementary schools spread
across the region, were trained and supervised by FUSE (Foundation for
Upgrading the Standard of Education) trainers, who are members of
faculty of the country’s leading colleges and universities.

The workshop included talks about the contents, methods and strategies
designed for English, Math and Science (Earth Science, Biology,
Physics, Chemistry) and that were aligned with the K-12 program, and
familiarizing the participants on the use of Constec (Continuing
Studies via Technology) DVDs and Teaching Support Materials (TSMs).

The event was held April 27 to May 1 following the signing of a
memorandum of agreement between FUSE, the Department of Education
(Region 1) and Tan Yan Kee Foundation (TYKF), the corporate social
entity of the Lucio Tan Group of Companies.

TYKF, which counts FUSE as one of its beneficiaries, shouldered the
mentors’ board and lodging, and provided the teachers with course
materials.

For its part, FUSE was tasked to conduct the training and assess.
monitor the performance of each participant, using the organization’s
evaluation materials.

“The workshop was actually the Enhancement Training Program, which was
crafted to train teachers as trainers to ensure the sustainability of
our project. This is to complement the K-12 curriculum,” said FUSE
president, Fr. Onofre G. Inocencio, Jr., SDB.

Earlier, over 100 teachers from the province of Sorsogon’s elementary
and public high schools also attended a five-day FUSE training
workshop at the Sorsogon State College.

It was staged in collaboration with the province’s DepEd Division and
Rep. Evelina Escudero, widow of former FUSE president and Rep.
Salvador H. Escudero III.

Teacher-training is one of FUSE’s major initiatives to help upgrade
the competencies of teachers in English, Math and Science.
